Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is a highly developed radiation treatment technology that allows the Radiation Oncologist to shape, or conform, the radiation beams to pinpoint accuracy around a tumor. IMRT is so advanced that the radiation beams are angled to destroy cancer cells while avoiding normal tissues and protecting healthy organs from exposure.
Generally combined with Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), IMRT patients generally experience less side effects of high-dose radiation, which helps them to remain in strong physical condition to carry out more ordinary lifestyles during their treatment course. It is used to treat many types of cancers including, but not limited to, prostate, breast, head and neck, lung and brain. IMRT is particularly helpful if you have received radiation treatment in the past.
