Breast cancer is the abnormal growth of cells within the breast. Although commonly diagnosed in women, breast cancer can be found in men as well. Cancers of the breast can be found in the ducts (ductal carcinoma), in the breast tissue itself (lobular carcinoma), or superficially on the skin in other cases.
Signs and symptoms of breast cancer depend on the individual diagnosis. The most noticeable sign of breast cancer is a palpable lump in the breast that can be detected by a breast self-exam or during a clinical breast exam. Other signs and symptoms include changes in shape or size of the breast, redness or warmth, nipple retraction, and nipple discharge. Changes in the skin such as thickening, alterations in texture, swelling, increased sensitivity, itching, and burning can also be a sign.
Further testing can be performed by mammography or sonography (ultrasound), and followed by a tissue biopsy for the confirmation of disease.
If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, radiation therapy can be used in conjunction with surgery and/or chemotherapy. Eastside Radiation offers the following treatment options for Breast Cancer:
